Near Miss View

I have had multiple near misses at this intersection with the most recent being on July 31, 2019 at 9:00 pm. Cars traveling south on Richmond Highway and turning left onto slaters are generally traveling at high speeds, rushing to beat oncoming cars and not aware of pedestrians. Cars traveling north on Richmond Highway are also not looking for pedestrians as they approach an easy right turn onto Slater’s Lane. I have repeatedly contacted Alexandria TES through Call.Click.Connect and through email exchanges.

Drivers making a right hand turn from N. Quaker onto Osage Street have the right of way. Drivers on Radford Street have a stop sign, but either blow through the stop sign or begin to proceed straight onto Radford only to be nearly hit by drivers with the right of way. Churchgoers for Blessed Sacrament and Lindsay Lexus customers frequent this intersection- highly trafficked!

Radford Street needs to be eliminated completely between West Braddock Road and Osage Street.

I’m 15 years old and am trying to make Seminary Road safer. But I’m also interested in making all the roads safer around Alexandria.

I drive through and walk near this intersection daily as it is the only exit/entry point to my neighborhood. I see vehicles speeding and running through the traffic light going both east bound and westbound on Duke Street at this intersection daily. There needs to be red light cameras installed at this intersection immediately. My vehicle was totaled last month when someone ran the red light and hit my car at this intersection!

We are facing serious issues with speeding cars including county vehicles! Please help us slow down traffic on our street. We have 9 young kids just on the 400 block!

There are drivers and scooters speeding, failing to yield to pedestrians, running red lights, and running stop signs.

No pedestrian lights or crosswalks to get from the open exit on North side of Eisenhower to the businesses on the South side of Eisenhower (Scramble, Chris Collins Dance, etc). Extremely dangerous to cross this four lane road with cars speeding around a curve.

The driver started sliding into the bike lane and I yelled and he looked up from his phone. He has been texting and driving and nearly hit me.

Was biking with my husband and daughter on a regular route we normally take when I was honked at and nearly hit by a black SUV with Florida plates. The SUV was traveling down Peyton toward King Street, making the right on King Street where s/he also failed to yield to a pedestrian crossing with the right of way (walking signal was lit). Ped said “wow, thanks a lot.”

numerous scooters left on the sidewalk, laying in the sidewalk in the foot path where a blind neighbor happens to traverse daily. These are an ADA hazard! WT Heck!

Scooter (again) going east on south side sidewalk of King St almost ran into me. I talked to the guy but he did not know he was not supposed to be on sidewalk. Scooter had a graphic indicating no sidewalk riding. So he asked where he’s supposed to ride and I said the street. And he said that looks dangerous…go figure…

This form should be updated to include scooter “near miss” incidents on sidewalks. I was walking east on the southside sidewalk on King Street (by the Bank bookstore) when I heard a noise behind me and when I turned around someone on a scooter was almost on top of me. When I jumped out of the way, the person continued east on the sidewalk even after I screamed at them that they were not supposed to be on the sidewalk. This is at least the third close call I’ve had with scooters on sidewalks in Old Town.

Drivers turning left (south bound) onto S Washington from Franklin often try to beat the one way East bound traffic by speeding through the pedestrian cross walk. I was very nearly hit when crossing from District Taco.

I was crossing Princess Street (at N. Washington) to go to Wells Fargo with the proper walking signal when a Mercedes drove extra fast in order to beat oncoming traffic to turn onto Princess to also go to the Bank. I had the opportunity to discuss the near miss and certain death to me if I hadn’t jumped back onto the sidewalk and he was shaken and sorry. However, he’d be sorry and I’d be dead. This situation where walkers have the signal to proceed (and the right of way) means nothing if cars ALSO have the green light to turn into us. Can that be changed?! Is there a citizen/police group working together to make walking safer?

Walking with my 2 sons and following the signals. One car turning left onto Route 1 claims not to have seen us, and actually ran into us. He came to a stop wedged against my sons stroller. Somehow no one was hurt .
Can I mention, that every other car at the intersection was beeping him and I recall people yelling at him to stop. As we walked off the road, I noticed everyone in their cars with their hands over their mouths.
How we survived I don’t know.

A mini cooper license place “TINNI” or something to that effect nearly hit my husband and me while we were crossing at the crosswalk on S. Fairfax where it intersects with Duke Street.

Male driver on mini-bike turning left at high speed from east-bound King St onto north-bound N Patrick St. Did not signal or sound horn. Made turn against red arrow. Came within 5-inches of me and my companion as we were mid-way in crosswalk heading east (mini-bike approached from behind us). Crosswalk contained a dozen or so pedestrians at the time. Mini-bike and driver were all in gray with no visible license plate.

Left turns from Duke (westbound) to Holland Lane frequently attempt to beat the light. This time it almost resulted in 4 pedestrians being crashed into. At Whole Foods corner…at evening rush hour.

Drivers on Holland Ln routinely fail to yield to pedestrians using crosswalk, often breaking speed limit.

I use this intersection daily as a pedestrian and cyclist. This intersection is hostile to pedestrians because the distance to cross any of the streets is too far. The curbs are designed to facilitate car traffic turning through the intersection which encourages cars to cut through the intersection when turning, presenting a hazard to pedestrians in the crosswalk as well as cyclists traversing the intersection. If the curbs were extended further into the intersection to shorten the distance pedestrians must travel to cross it, it would slow down turning cars by forcing them to make a tighter turn. This would help pedestrians as well as cyclists at this location.

Driver going north on S Saint Asaph and turning right onto Prince St (going east) almost ran into me and my partner as we were in the crosswalk with the walk sign.

I was crossing Mt. Vernon Ave in the crosswalk heading west on my bike when a driver rolled through the red light (never stopping) to turn right from Mt. Vernon Ave onto Four Mile Road, coming within inches of hitting me, and another pedestrian who was crossing going the opposite way. The driver continued going and sped away after we screamed to alert him that he was about to hit us.

Note–I’ve had numerous near misses at this intersection from drivers turning right on red without stopping first to check the crosswalk, this is just the most recent.

The intersection is right where Buzz Bakery is on one side and Rustico Restaurant on the other corner. People consistently double park on PGD to “run in” to the various stores. Also the entrances to the two parking lots on each side of the street for the shopping centers face each other. When people can’t find parking in one, They “speed” to the other. Typically drivers don’t really bother to look as the jettison across PGD. With the cars double parked, there is less visibility of pedestrians. There is also a capitol bike share there. Bike riders are riding on the sidewalk, ALWAYS….because the cars are a mess, double parked and not parked in legal spots. This also includes metro/WMATA vehicles that I have pictures of.

I was stopped at the stop sign with my right turn signal on. About to turn right, a cyclist zoomed between my car and a parked car on my right, totally ignoring the stop sign. There is no bike lane there, so the cyclist should’ve been behind me. I blew my horn as he raced by and he totally ignored it. My swift reaction averted an accident.

No cross walk no light and very near the metro so lots of peds

The bike lanes going westbound end right at Washington forcing cyclists to mix with drivers turning right and going straight, which is dangerous because of driver aggression and the frequent back-ups there. Between Washington and Columbus there is a sharrow, but because drivers act so aggressively on this stretch, it is not safe to ride on the street. The S-turn at N. Columbus is unsafe because drivers turn into and usually block the bike lane that reappears after the light.

I was walking on Duke with a double stroller and almost got hit by an SUV taking a quick left during rush hour. There are several daycares/preschool on Duke and many walkers. The intersections on Daingerfield and Peyton etc are not well lit and very dangerous. I have a light and reflective tape, but the cars turning left pay no attention to pedestrians! Please help!

People walking, biking and driving have a hard time seeing each other due to poor visibility. Pulling back parking here would allow everyone to see each other. I have had several near misses while biking along this route.

People cannot see people in the bike lane due to parked cars which are too close to the intersection. In fact, some of the signs are not in compliance with city staff.

This is a crosswalk mid block. I was nearly hit today. This is a clearly marked crosswalk but yet drivers do not stop for pedestrians. There needs to be lights installed to improve the visual site of pedestrians in the crosswalk.

Crossing Eisenhower while holding the hands of my two kids (4 and 6). The light changed for us to cross, the driver made a right turn without looking. I don’t like the intersection, everyone is in a hurry as they get of the beltway. I usually take my kids up a block, but there is a much longer wait time at the light (seems larger intersections tend to change more often), and this morning I chose not to.

Was driving towards Beatley Bridge on Pickett and a driver swung out of the Beatley Library driveway having looked, but not seen, my approaching vehicle. She exited left into the street seemingly unaware of my car, and missed me by about 10 inches. There are often large vans/shuttle buses parked in that area, which could obscure a driver’s ability to see oncoming traffic.

Very bad lines of sight cause drivers on Luray to have to pull out on to Commonwealth to see. Drivers on Commonwealth routinely speed, especially if they see that the light at Braddock has turned green. Numerous fender benders here and many near misses (I can hear the screeching of brakes and crunching of cars from my house). I report each one I hear but no effort has been made by the City to make this intersection safer. Additionally, drivers ignore pedestrians in the new zebra cross walk at this intersection. Several times I have been in the intersection with cars stopped in one direction while drives on the other side pass right in front of me.

This has happened more than once just to me in this intersection. After the incident, a woman who witnessed this talked to me about many near misses – and one actual incident of a car hitting a person and knocking them off their feet – in the nearby interior sections.

I also witnessed a pedestrian struck by a car in this intersection on Nov 2. Drivers treat Cameron as a thorough-fare with most rolling through stop signs and exceeding the speed limit. Police presence is zero. Hope your organization can make a difference!

Drivers are continually running the red light in the slip lane from Duke St. going west to North Quaker lane. I don’t cross here every day, maybe twice a week. In the past year, approximately one-third of the time (I counted), a driver ran the red light (actually there are three red lights facing this one lane) while I was crossing. Another one did it yesterday evening. I don’t think we need “education” here. I think we need a physical barrier like a railroad crossing gate that drivers will think twice about before crashing through it.

Wilkes does not have a stop sign, allowing cars to speed through. Every other East-West street in this neighborhood has a stop sign, do cyclists and pedestrians are often surprised by cars not stopping.

Driver stopped to apologize. Said he couldn’t see us (maybe due to sunlight glare?). I’ve heard several cases of drivers scaring themselves so much they stop to apologize.

Our neighborhood has repeatedly asked the city for stop signs and crosswalks to mitigate cars speeding through Montrose as a cut through from Rt 1 to Glebe. Our neighborhood has many pedestrians crossing Montrose and there’s very little visibility with the parked cars. My children and I have had close calls multiple times.

Cars will not stop for pedestrians. The cars speed past you while you are halfway across the street. Buses have blocked street to allow pedestrians to cross to catch the bus.

People don’t yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk and frequently speed along Glebe.

This intersection is AWFUL. Only 3 of the 5 entrances into the intersection have to stop. Of these, one cannot see cross traffic from the right. Drivers frequently speed on Glebe road, and they routinely fail to yield to pedestrians. On Monday evening, some woman waved her cell phone at me, as if it was a valid excuse not to stop for me (I had already waited for about 2 minutes while at least 15 other drivers failed to yield). It was broad daylight, and I had a dog and a stroller with me, so it’s not like I couldn’t be seen. My neighborhood discusses this frequently on our listserv, and the city has so far been deaf to multiple years of requests for a 5-way stop sign there. One of my neighbors works from home and reports hearing at least 3 near-misses per day and has heard multiple accidents.

Parked cars on Montrose create terrible sight lines for vehicles entering/exiting Montrose. That curve on Montrose should prohibit parking on at least one – if not both sides of the street for safety. Yes, I understand that parking is a premium; however, safety should always be our first consideration.

Daily I have a near miss at this intersection. It’s difficult because it is an off-center intersection by typically it is cars on Commonwealth that think they have stopped because the car in front of them stopped OR they do not allow enough time for cars on Del Ray to safely pass through the intersection.
Residents of East DR (0-99 block) have requested the stop signs have reflectors added similar to others in the neighborhood but because the city doesn’t have any reported accidents (it’s just a matter of time!) they have not acted on our request.

Driver executed illegals upturn at intersection almost hitting a pedestrian crossing Fairfax

I appreciate the work that has gone into this intersection, but motorists routinely turn right on red off of King onto Menokin, endangering me in the crosswalk. Additionally, the crosswalk on Menokin and Van Dorn a few feet up is always blocked by cars that don’t stop at the lights. It’s super unsafe given the amount of foot traffic and two preschools that are right there!

For pedestrians, we need a crosswalk, flashing lights and foliage removal to make crossing this street safe. Also it is hard to pull out of the street safely in a vehicle with speeding on Jordan St and lack of visibility because of foliage.

I was walking my dog and a man in a blue CRV was speeding down East Windsor. He was not going to stop at the stop sign but then saw me in the cross walk and slammed on his breaks. He was inches away from hitting me and my dog. I paused in the cross walk and he proceeded to swerve around me and continued to speed away.

Driver blew through not 1, but 2 stop signs (Van Valkenburgh and then Leslie) within a matter of seconds. He did not pause a sufficient amount of time at either stop in order to establish that the path was safe for him to proceed. In fact, he sped up through his stops. We stopped dead in our tracks, in the middle of the road, to avoid being struck as it was clear he had no intention of slowing down. My SO said “Nice stop” very audibly and he yelled back “Where’s YOUR sidewalk?!”

DASH bus #82 almost ran me over, did not stop or even slow with me in the crosswalk. I’m 6’4” and very easy to spot.

Dark, crosswalk needs yield to peds sign and speed hump

I was half way through the cross walk when a driver did a rolling slow down at the stop sign across the street, directly opposite me. the driver kept coming directly at me and waved their hand for me to get out of the way. The driver never stopped, just kept moving forward. I side stepped the car and slapped the back side of the car to let her hear the sound of hitting someone. The driver just kept on going and blew through the next stop sign on Madison and N Pitt.

The cross walk at the intersection of Montgomery and N. Pitt needs to be repainted b/c it is fading but it is heard not to see a person walking at the corner across the cross walk at 6 pm, still plenty of day light.

Del Ray Old Town North Area:Braddock Road between Seven-Eleven and Potomac Yard Park on crosswalk. Child nearly hit by driver. Dangerous double-threat location. This happened today. I cross that crosswalk regularly and over the last years I have seen many near misses there.

SUV drove through red light. Also seemed to be traveling well in excess of 35 mph speed limit. The pedestrian crossing signal had been white (cross now) for several seconds when the driver ran the light and me and my two boys were about to cross.

Bus stop at this location makes for hazardous crossing. Cars trying to pass stopped bus have almost hit pedestrians several times.

On street Parking is allowed directly adjacent to crosswalk and makes it hard to see pedestrians as they walk into crosswalk. Also hard for children to see traffic on street. Daylighting is needed here.

At the crosswalk in front of Whole Foods, someone went through the red light while I had the walk signal. As I know this intersection well and how dangerous it is, I did not immediately step out to cross because I could see the white van barrelling east on Duke was not going to stop. This happens all the time at this intersection. Vehicles get confused with the next signal on Holland Lane being green but the light at Reinkers Lane is red so pedestrians can cross.

I was crossing Aspen walking northbound and the driver at the stop sign turning right never looked. I had to jump back.

I was riding south on the Mt. Vernon Trail parallel to S. Washington St where at the intersection to the Bridgeyard Apartment complex, a jeep with six occupants chose not to stop for the red light and disregard the green pedestrian signal and made a right turn to go north on Washington St. I had to use all my brakes to stop and avoid being hit.

Perhaps the Bridgeyard management company should be asked to inform their residents to be mindful and avoid traffic lights and rules of the road when enterring and exiting their complex.

My sign was crossing the street with a walk signal. A car turning right onto Seminary from St Stephens almost hit him. He was very upset and frightened.

On a regular basis, in afternoons and evenings, crossing North-South on s. Washington along the west side of the street, cars turning right or left onto Gibbon from S. Washington speed bump to get through before you finish crossing and nearly hit you or don’t even look before turning. They have come so close I could touch their hoods of their cars. Often they yell at pedestrians for having the audacity to cross with the pedestrian walk signal. I have had to stop talking my walks along there entirely for the most part.

The right turn lane light goes green at the same time that the crosswalk walk sign goes on and as we were crossing we almost got hit by an oncoming car.

My sister and I were walking with my baby in the carriage, northbound on the east side of Mt Vernon, crossing Commonwealth in the crosswalk. Driver came north on Mt Vernon and turned right into Commonwealth and honked at us, right as we stepped off the curb into the crosswalk, when we had the walk signal.

The older two girls were at camps this morning so I took the younger two on a jog on the Potomac Yards trails.

To get back to our car I had to cross the street which was under an overpass (Monroe and Main Line Blvd). I got the walk signal and quickly checked the left turn cars would wait for me. There was a big SUV edging out but she was going slow. I crossed the street but quickly and frantically realized she did not see me or the double stroller with two tiny kids in it.

She was coming at me and fast. I was trying to get out of her way as she kept turning right into me, I was screaming for her to see me and swerve. I reach out to touch the car and she finally saw me and swerved.

I got to the other side of the street and practically collapsed onto that sidewalk in tears. I couldn’t help it, my entire body was shaking. Another car stopped and asked if I was OK and I told her I was just scared.

The woman in the SUV pulled around and got out. She hugged me and cried too. We were both sobbing. She kept apologizing and asked for my forgiveness. I told her of course and thanked her for stopping.

That’s a tricky spot because it is dark under the overpass. I usually make eye contact with drivers before I proceed to make sure they see me. I thought she saw me because she started edging out slowly, but apparently that had nothing to do with me. Maybe in an area where so many people exercise (and kids play soccer) we should give the crossing pedestrians a few minutes walk time with no traffic.

Honestly, 5 seconds more and I would have been hit. I got home and prayed a prayer of gratitude for my safety. Please look into this area so this doesn’t happen again to anyone. Thank you!

The stretch of east reed between route 1 and commonwealth has NO NO traffic calming or pedestrian investments. Cars and busses speed down it.
