Alexandria Families for Safe Streets (AFSS) is working to make our streets safer for pedestrians and cyclists. We’re collecting data in an effort to identify areas where pedestrians & cyclists have had near misses that do not show up in traditional crash data sources. The data collected will be shared with the City to help identify, in more of a real time setting, locations with potential safety issues. By providing fresh “Near Miss” data, our goal is to translate this data into recommendations for safer street crossings and improve pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure where historic pedestrian / cyclist crash data does not necessarily indicate safety issues in the coming years. This could help improve future street engineering changes and high visibility enforcement.
Disclaimer:
AFSS is only collecting and then sharing the “Near Miss” data with the City. Ultimate decisions on locations and engineering improvements and the timing and level of police traffic surveillance are the responsibility of the professionals at the Alexandria Department of Transportation and Environmental Services and the Alexandria Police Department.
