What is the role of the NoVA FSS chapter advisory board?
The board helps to maintain the vitality of NoVA FSS (specifically, its Alexandria, Arlington & Fairfax chapters) and make administrative decisions on behalf of members. For example, organizing outreach events like Farmers Markets, Pedestrian Educational programs in our public middle and upper schools, joining in our street safety advocacy efforts at City Hall / Board of Supervisors, etc.

As an advisory board member, you help focus the relevant NoVA FSS chapter’s efforts where you think it best serves its members.
How long does an advisory board member serve?
Terms are for two years from January 1 – December 3 with the option to renew at the end of your term.
How often does the advisory board meet?
The board meets once per month except in July and August plus 4 regional NoVA FSS regional meetings once per quarter so a total of 14 times a year. All meeting are 90 minutes or less with 90% of the meeting conducted virtually.
How many positions make up the advisory board?
The advisory board is comprised of 2 officers and up to 6 other members.
What are the responsibilities of an advisory board member?
Board members choose to focus on one or more areas that typically include:
- advocacy of street safety improvement with the police and transportation staff
- advocacy of traffic regulation issues at the local government and state level
- pedestrian educational programs in schools and raising awareness of the Near Miss app
- public outreach via social media as well as periodic social events
- membership growth
- data analytics of the Near Miss submissions
